When I am an Old Woman...

by Suzanne White - on Monday, December 10, 2018

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple

With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves

And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.

A Sibling Who Gets It

HAVE YOU EVER noticed that when you are with a sibling you haven't seen in awhile, the rhythms are suddenly all right? There's something about the pace of language that flows between members of one's immediate family that's whipped cream smooth. You don't have to make an effort to make yourself understood. The sibling gets it. And you get them.

Sorrow and Regret

Today I found myself crying. The arrival of this weepy episode was unexpected. Since my kids evicted me from my house in 1998, I have not cried. After that event, I refused all emotion. The pain of what had happened was so deep and pervasive that I knew I would never live through more of the same. So I blocked all entries to emotion.I knew that If I cried about what had happened, I would die crying. So I blockaded emotion. Never again would I trust or believe blindly in anyone.

A DYING RACE - The Boston Brahmins

Thinking, from here in France where I live, about the "sitchewayshun" in the US today. I can see what's happening better from here. The rich old guard white guys are losing their power. Their numbers are shrinking. The blue blood white families who used to run the American show are fading out, losing ground.

I go to Lucca often. Recently, I took this photo of the city from up hIgh. As you can see, Lucca town (Population 390,000) is entirely surrounded by fortifications. The dimensions of the walls are startling. 4 kilometers long. Nearly 30 meters wide. Made up of 11 different earthworks.

Snow Storm in Paradise

It's snowing big white pompoms here in the beautiful, sunshiney south of France. The snow is coming down fast and thick like a heavy rain. It's blanketing the trees and roads and fields in pretty white fluffy stuff that nobody from this neck of the woods has a clue how to function in. Everyone in the clinic is cackling about how (and if) they will get home and back for work tomorrow.

The Longest Plane Ride

Callas, France, February 22, 2018. After fracturing my hip and having surgery to replace the broken bit, I have been in this rehab clinic to learn how to walk for more than a month. I committed that hip fracture crime by means of a spectacular tripping episode, full body flight and crash landing in my bedroom on January 15 of this year. I have been out of hospital post op with a prosthesis where my hip bone once was for quite a spell. I am currently looking at another month or more of physical therapy here.

God Doesn't Do Coincidences. You Can Bet Your Ass.

God doesn't do coincidences. You can bet your ass.” Matthew Quick , The Good Luck of Right Now

Monday morning at 9 I went out to move the car. I was shocked by the freezing cold day. So I decided I better drive to the mall to look for gloves. As the French say, "I broke my nose" on that mission. No gloves this year. I gave up on gloves. This store I was in is one of those mammoth football field-size we-sell-everything stores, complete with blaring voices promoting cheap smoked salmon or champagne for Christmas.

Barbara Campbell wrote to say her hair was also straight and lank and blond like mine is now. But she added, "I have pretty eyelashes". This remark reminded me of an incident that happened in 1965. So I wrote back to Barbara:
