Life on the Run

3 days ago my Macbook Pro laptop Keyboard stopped writing some letters. I called around. My trusty Mac Fixit Go-to-Guy is MissMac. Miss Mac is a savvy techie woman in San Rafael California who repairs Macs. She's not far from me and we have often worked together. I call her and ask: "Joyce, My keyboard won't print some letters." She had me do some manipulations pressing keys and hold letters etc. They did not work. "Maybe some water got in there. Do you drink when you write?" I confessed I do coffee, lemonade, wine and sometimes even water when I working. "Some liquid must have gotten in there. Better go to the Mac Store and get an opinion."

I call and make appt w Mac Store for Saturday 4:30 pm. Then I got sick and cancelled appt with Mac store Sat. afternoon. Whilst feeling ill all day and reading a New Yorker cover to cover, I deduced that could go to Best Buy today (Sunday) to test out one of those tiny wireless keyboards with my Macbook Pro laptop. Walked in, told my tale to the host guy and was directed to the Geek Squad desk. Nice young pigtailed geek person listened and directed me to the rear of the store to look at keyboards. He said, "I've seen estimates for replacing keyboards on those machines. They are very steep. Maybe better even to buy a new computer. But go see the keyboards..."

Sales guy, Jorge, was nice too and showed me the tiny dual purpose wireless and/or plug-in keyboards they had. I said "Let's test one out and see if it works." He said he was sorry but first I'd need to buy it. He can't open a box till it belongs to the customer.

"If it doesn't work can I bring it back?"

"Oh yes. No problem."

So I paid $100. and we took it from the box and plugged it into my computer. When we typed with it, it picked up the flaws in my own keyboard and refused to print the very same letters my laptop keyboard refused to print. Sigh.

"You'll have to disable your keyboard before it will work." Jorge the sales guy advised. "Take it to the Geek Squad up front and ask him to disable it for you."

I go to the bright-eyed Geek and he puzzles and plugs and encounters the same problem. Now he agrees. We must disable my keyboard. We try System Preferences and no place does it tell us how to disable the keyboard. He asks a geek buddy who doesn't know either. So he asks Google which tells him to hit the option key 5 times and disable when the image appears on the screen. He did that. And now not only does the wireless keyboard work, mine works again. I am overjoyed. He was skeptical. "If water got in there, the problem can come back. Keep the small keyboard for a few days before returning it. Wait and see if yours remains in working order."

So I did that and am now actually using my own machine again and I know what to do if it happens again. Hit that option key 5 times and Bingo!

For some reason I found that geek fellow who had two long braids and tattoos everywhere, really smart. I could practically feel his brain turning and calculating. Couldn't resist. Asked for his birth date. Of course! An Aquarius/Rat. Textbook case. I quote from The New Astrology: "This super intelligent person cares less about tangibles than I do about Eskimo fertility rites. He’s a bohemian with a bourgeois streak. A hippie sophisticate." Perfect New Astrology sign for a Geek

His name is Tyler. I told him he is a hyper intelligent "heady" type person often who often takes off into the clouds. He said, "That's really interesting. It's true. I am often elsewhere in my head. I am going to San Francisco State next year to study Philosophy." PERFECTO! I thought. New Astrology works every time. I sent him an e-book so he can read about his Scorpio/Ox girlfriend.

I will hang onto the small keyboard just in case till I see how my own behaves. Overjoyed! Saved a truckload of money and time. sw P.S. Photo is not me.
