Why I Live in France

WHY DO I LIVE IN FRANCE? The answer (along with France's excellent single payer health care, super trains, French lovers and The Mediterranean Sea) is "La Bouffe" (The Grub). In the past week I have received a fortnight's worth of zesty, scrumptious foods gifted to me by a few of my French neighbors. Not junk foods like chocolate bars or cream puffs. But FOOD.

Real meals cooked by their own hands and offered to me in various hermetically sealed plastic containers that the French call "Tooperwahr" (loosely translates as Tupperware). From Albert, I received "Daube de sanglier" (he killed the wild boar for digging up his garden). I got 2 meals out of that Tooperwahr. Along with that delicacy came a containerful of "Porc au Caramel" (Albert is half Vietnamese). He cuisines tangy Viet dishes. To top off the boar and the pork, he brought a container of wild mushroom stew made from the "champignons" he found on his land. So far, I have had 4 meals out of his food. Then there is Karine Tran who came to deliver birthday flowers and brought me Pho soup that she had just made (at her restaurant) to have for my dinner.

Today, I went to Alice and Claudine Buffet's (sisters who live in separate apts in the same bldg) Alice made a huge steaming pot of Pot au feu with leeks, carrots, turnips. potatoes and a special kind of melt-in-your-mouth meat called "La Galinette" and of course a marrow bone. I had never previously heard of La Galinette. But I was informed that in the south of France they recommend using it for pot au feu. We ate Sunday lunch at Alice's house. Alice's sister, Claudine had cooked something too. A great pot of curried porc au lait de coco with ginger and turmeric etc. She brought it down from her flat, steaming in a rustic dish and set it on the table.

As I had consumed too much pot au feu, I declined her offer of a plateful of rice and this heaven scented curried pork delicacy she had concocted. After the cheese and an ice cream speciality made of layered chocolate and vanilla ices, we finished lunch at about 4:30 pm. I was replete and wanted to come home directly. But before they would let me leave, the Buffet sisters got out more of their oversized Tooperwahrs and filled them up with pot au feu and curried pork au lait de coco and rice.

I still have some daube left from Albert's dead wild boar so along with that, if I calculate correctly, I will not have to cook till next weekend when maybe some other gifted neighborhood chefs will invite me to eat myself silly at their house and then provide me with takeout for another week.

P.S. Once, a few years ago, when I was back in the States for awhile, I wondered if I should not just stay there - Family, Friends, The Kids etc. Then I reasoned it out and came up quite rapidly with the solution: "Suzanne White," I said to myself. "You eat three times a day." I straightaway flew back to France for the sake of eating and I am still here.... eating. ©sw2018
